The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) have formulated a marine environment related programme for the seas bordering the South Asian countries, viz. India, Balgladesh, Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Under this programme, an action plan for the protection and management of marine environment is being developed. A draft action plan was finalised in the meeting of the National Focal Points held in Colombo, Sri Lanka in November 1994. The plan envisages adoption of operational measures for preservation and conservation of marine environment, measures to deal with degradation of marine environment, human resources development etc. The Plan will be adopted by the countries after it is approved by the Governments concerned.
