An ad-hoc meeting of States Parties (the States which have
ratified the UNCLOS) was held in New York on 21-22 November 1994.
States signatories to the UNCLOS participated as observers. India
participated as an observer.
The matters relating to deferment and phasing in of the
Tribunal were discussed informally. India was invited to participate in these
consultations. It was agreed that the nominations for the elections to the
membership of the Tribunal would be opened on 16 May 1995 and elections
held in 1996. A State in the process of becoming a party to the Convention
may nominate a candidate.
The States Parties would meet again in May 1995 at which time
they will consider the question of establishment of the Commission on the
Limits of the Continental Shelf.
