Advanced Training Course on Sea Level Change & Coastal Environment

Advanced Training Course on the Sea-level Change and Coastal Environment, sponsored by IOC was held at Jakarta, Indonesia from 28 Oct.-9 Nov., 96. The Course was attended by Shri R.K.Sharma, PSO of the Department.

The Course was intended to respond to the needs of the IOC member states in the Eastern Indian Ocean, Southwest and South Pacific regions to learn more about the formation of coastal and nearshore non-living resources and long-term evolution of coastal-geological environments.


Training on Environment Conservation

Shri Ghosh Dastidar, SSO, DOD was deputed to Korea for a training programme on Marine Environment Conservation held at Koare Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI), Korea from August 30 to September 21, 1996. The main purpose of the course was to allow personnel currently involved in oceanographic iinvestigations from ASEAN member states from the WESTPAC region, to be acquainted with the advanced general oceanographic investigation technology and more applied environmental preservation/ resource exploitation technology through lecture and oceanographic observations.


Visits to Study Data Buoy Systems

A two member delegation consisting of Prof. M. Ravindran, Executive Director, NIOT and Shri B.N. Krishnamurthy, Director DOD visited Thailand to study the data buoy system being set up in Thailand. The deputation was undertaken in view of a similar programme being undertaken in India. The two member delegation held deliberations with the officials of the Government of Thailand and inspected the data buoy system in the Thailand waters. The visit was useful to crystallise the data buoy programme for implementation in India.


Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD)

The fourth session of CSD to discuss the ocean and atmosphere related issues was held from April 18 to May 3, 1996 at United Nations, New York. Dr. B.R. Subramanian, Director, DOD attended this session along with officials of the Ministry of Environment & Forests. During this meeting several measures required to protect living and non-living resources and sustainable development of environment in the coastal seas, exclusive economic zone were recommended. The need for providing technical and financial assistance to developing countries in the adoption of recommended measures were also discussed.


Capacity Building in the Management of Coastal and Marine Environment

The Department of Ocean Development has proposed to undertake new programme in the area of Integrated Coastal and Marine Area Management. The World Bank has agred to consider to the International Development Association based credit for capacity building activities for this programme as a part of an umbrella programme on Environment Capacity Building in India. Ameeting to discuss the financial issues was held from October 29 to November 11, 1996 at World Bank Headquarters, Washington. Dr. B.R. Subramanian, Director, DOD participated in the meeting along with the officials of the Ministry of Environment & Forests.
