A three member Indian delegation headed by the Secretary, DOD which included a senior officer from the Department and an official of the Indian Embassy at Lima, Peru participated in the 2nd Meeting of the Committee on Environmental Protection and 23rd Meeting of the ATCM held during 24th May – 4th June, 1999 at Lima, Peru. The Indian delegation participated effectively in the deliberations of the two meetings and made India’s position clear particularly in the area of the preparation of the draft comprehensive environmental protection guidelines and their consideration by the Committee on Environmental Protection, the Emergency Response and Contingency Planning particularly with a reference to oil spills in the Antarctic region and their impact on the Antarctic resources, exchange of data and information through web site and the liability regime as contained in the Environmental Protocol. The Indian delegation made use of this opportunity for furthering bilateral cooperation between Italy, France, Germany, Argentina and Peru in the filed of polar science and logistics.
