MoU for Cooperation in the field of Earth System Sciences.October 14,2014.
The MoU has been extended by 5 years from Oct 2019.
Under this MoU, joint programs on common areas of interest were developed through joint calls in the field of Earth System Science. Following two workshops on Geo-hazards and polar research in India in 2013 and subsequent joint call in Feb 2015, 5 projects under Climate System in Polar regions and 3 projects under Geohazard theme are supported by the ministry. Two of the projects have been completed while others are in various stages of implementation.

Major progress includes (i) NCPOR-NPI team carried out geophysical surveys during the 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20 field seasons in Antarctica and drilled a 153 m ice core at the summit of Leningradkollen ice rise in coastal Antarctica. The geophysical data and the ice cores are being processed and analyzed. (ii) Arctic climate variability during the Mid-Pliocene Warm Period was studied using various proxies in the sediment samples collected from the various IODP Expeditions in the Arctic Ocean and Eastern Arabian Sea. (iii) Various CMIP5 models were used to study the intra-seasonal variability of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) and the Tele-connection between ISM and the changing wind patterns. (iv) Diatoms in the marine sediment cores from two Arctic fjords were analyzed to reconstruct the Sea Surface temperature and Sea Ice during Holocene (OCTAL) (v) Extensive geophysical surveys, sampling and measurements carried out by  NCPOR-NPI team have provided first estimate of the ice flow and basal melting of an ice shelf in East Antarctica. (vi) A reliable high-resolution (0.1 x 0.1deg) emission inventory of eight indirect greenhouse gases and particulate matter pollutants (includes PM 10 , PM 2.5 , CO, NO X , SO 2 , VOC, BC, OC has been developed for Indian subcontinent for base year 2018. (vii) Data regarding rainfall, seismicity and PGA along the two road transects in the Gangtok Tsomgo /Changu Lake and Gangtok-Chungthang-Lachen Corridor were studied. An Indo-Norway review on the progress of the projects was held on 23 March 2021 and future areas of interest were discussed.
